BC has announced 5 paid sick days for employees in addition to the 3 unpaid days previously allowed. This brings the total number of job protected sick days to 8 in BC (5 paid + 3 unpaid)
While the full text of BC Employment Standards wording is not yet available many details now are:
- Employees will be eligible after 90 days of employment
- Full-time, part-time and casual employees are eligible
- Employees NOT covered by the ESA are not eligible (ie. federally regulated employers, contractors)
There is also proposed legislation to provide 10 paid sick days for federally regulated employers. If mandated, that will likely be announced at some point in 2022 from the Federal Government.
