Bill C-4 has received royal assent, officially creating three new temporary recovery benefits to support Canadians unable to work for reasons related to COVID-19. This new legislation will now replace the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB).
The three new temporary recovery benefits:
- The Canada Recovery Caregiving Benefit (CRCB)
- Provides $500 per week per houselhold for up to 26 weeks for workers unable to work for at least 50% of the week due to one of the following COVID-19 related reasons:
- In order to care for a child under 12 years of age due to schools, day cares and care facilities being closed;
- In order to care for another family member due to schools, day cares and care facilities being closed.
- A child or family member is sick, required to quarantine, or is at high risk of serious health implications due to COVID-19
- The Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit (CRSB)
- Provides $500 per week for up to 2 weeks for workers unable to work for at least 50% of the week due to one of the following COVID-19 related reasons:
- Person in question has tested positive for COVID-19;
- Person in question is required to self-isolate for reasons related to COVID-19;
- Person in question has an underlying medical condition(s) that makes them more susceptible to contracting COVID-19.
- The Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB)
- Provides eligible workers with $500 per week for up to 26 weeks for those who have stopped working and who are not eligbe for EI. Or, have had employment/self-employment reduced by at least 50% due reasons relating to COVID-19.
These benefits will be subject to a 10% withholding tax at source ($450 net). Canadians can apply through the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) website.
